adidas Grand Prix LIVE

Some of the world’s best athletes have descended on the Big Apple for the adidas Grand Prix, Saturday, June 14 at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island. There are quite a few U.S. athletes competing in the meet, with stacked fields especially in the women’s pole vault, men’s 400 meters, women’s 1500 meters and the adidas women’s 100-meter hurdles. Many of the events are previews of the showdowns fans can expect to see at the USATF Outdoor Championships, June 25-29, in Sacramento at Hornet Stadium. Live webcast coverage of the adidas Grand Prix on USATF.tv begins at 2:58 p.m. ET with the men’s 800 meters “B” race and breaks at 4 p.m. ET after a highly-anticipated women’s 800 meters featuring reigning U.S. 1500m champion Mary Cain. Also included in the USATF.tv webcast window are the adidas Dream races, including the girls’ and boys’ adidas Dream 100m and the girls’ and boys’ adidas Dream Mile. Those races begin at 3:07 p.m. ET. NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) will broadcast the meet live from 4-6 p.m. ET, both to a nationally-televised audience and online. The women’s race will see World and Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce leading the way. The Jamaican star sprinter bounced back from a leg problem on Saturday, where she finished last in the 200m in Eugene, with a 100m win in Bellinzona on Tuesday and she said she’s ready for a better performance in Rome. Countrywomen Kerron Stewart and Simone Facey, Murielle Ahoure of the Ivory Coast and American Tori Bowie, who surprised everyone to win the 200m at Prefontaine are also down to race against Fraser-Pryce.

Kristi Castlin, who has a personal best of 12.56, is also a very strong competitor and has what it takes to win. Fellow Americans Gabby Moya, Tenaya Jones, and Jackie Coward should add to the excitement. Meanwhile, Jamaican Mario Forsythe and St. Kitts and Nevis’ Antoine Adams will take on Americans Isiah Young and Maurice Mitchell in the men’s 200m. Arnaud Remy of France is also on the start list. In the women’s 100m, Schillonie Calvert of Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago’s Michelle Lee Ahye will face a strong field, which includes Americans Lashauntea Moore, Tiffany Townsend, Mikele Barber, Candyce McGrone and Moya.

In addition to Fraser-Pryce’s plethora of medals from major championships, including winning three golds at last summer’s IAAF World Championships in Moscow, the 100m head-to-head record between the pair is 12-3, Okagbare’s last win coming at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in London just before Moscow 2013. Adding competitiveness to the 100m field will be Jamaica’s Kerron Stewart, and two quick US sprinters, English Gardner and Alexandria Anderson, the latter pair finishing first and second in the 2013 US Championships and both running well under 11 seconds last season. While there are some interesting clashes in individual events the 4x100 metres will take centre stage. In the women's event, hot schoolgirl team Edwin Allen, after their splendid record-breaking 44.17 seconds to win the Class One event at 'Champs' will be hoping to become the first local schoolgirl quartet to go under 44 seconds. Their main rivals are UTech, the fastest female quartet this year with 43.84, Sprintec and MVP. After seeing four teams go under 39 seconds at the Gibson Relays, another megaclash is set for the men's 4x100m. The star-studded Racers Track Club should parade Yohan Blake, Warren Weir and Kemar Bailey Cole and will start favourites. However, they will have to be at their best to overcome the Andrew Fisher-led UTech and the Nesta Carter-led MVP. Top high-school male and female teams will face the starter in the 4x100m, 4x400m and 4x800m as they look to warm up for the Penn Relays. World Championships 200m silver medallist Warren Weir will line up in the men's 100m. Weir will compete in his second 100m this season, following his successful debut in month of February at the UWI Invitational. Weir who will compete in the first of three heats is against teammate Michael Frater, Akan Track club's Oshane Bailey and Sprintec's Everton Clarke. HEAT TWO Heat Two should also be competitive as the Akan track club duo of Dexter Lee and Jason Livermore will match strides with UTech's Tyquendo Tracy and Cameron Blazers' Marvin Anderson.
