LIVE BLOG: Zimbabwe on the brink as military seizes power, tanks surrounding Harare

JOHANNESBURG — The situation in Zimbabwe is fast developing after the military overnight seized control of the country. The Zimbabwe Defense Forces say they will guarantee the safety of Mugabe, 93, and his family and is only “targeting criminals around him who are committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country in order to bring them to justice.” The fallout comes after Mugabe fired his long-time ally Emmerson Mnangagwa as vice president in a move that paved the way for his wife Grace to take control of Zanu-PF and the country.
